COUNCIL tax in Caerphilly is set to rise by 3.5 per cent this year, the Argus can reveal.

The council's Labour cabinet met this week to debate the increase, and settled on an above-inflation proposed rise of 3.5 per cent.

The proposal is set to be confirmed at a special cabinet meeting tomorrow, before being ratified at a special council meeting later that afternoon.

If given the go ahead, it will push average Band D rates above £1,000 for the first time.

Caerphilly had one of the better revenue support grant settlements from the Assembly of £238 million, a rise of 2.8 per cent on last year.

It is understood the council has "healthy balances" and services are unlikely to see significant cuts.

  • Monmouthshire is proposing a 4.95 per cent council tax increase, Newport a 3.5 per cent increase, and Blaenau Gwent a 3.9 per cent increase.
