NEWPORT'S tax office is set to close, it was revealed today.
HM Revenue and Customs has published the outcome of a review into its buildings in Newport, Cardiff and Pontypridd.
Crown Buildings in Chepstow Road and Taff Vale House in Pontypridd will be vacated and the department's operations will all be housed in Llanishen in Cardiff.
An enquiry office will remain in the city.
City leaders campaigned to save the Newport office after it was announced that 140 jobs were at risk of being transferred in the proposed shake-up.
Closures are due to begin from 2009 but some staff may move before then, said HMRC.
Mary Hay, the director responsible for the programme, said they had consulted widely with a range of bodies and staff before making the decision.
But Newport East AM John Griffiths vowed to fight on to ensure "local services remain locally provided for local people".
