A YOUNG man became the fifth person to die after a series of tragic road accidents last weekend.

The 21-year old man from Cwmbran was among three people rescued by fire officers from a Fiat Bravo on Sunday April 20.

The vehicle was involved in a collision at 12.45pm on Sunday April 20 on Thornhill Road, near to the junction with Hafren Road, Cwmbran.

He had been taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, and was later transferred to the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.

Police reported that he was in a serious condition on Sunday night. He has not yet been named.

The accident was one of five reported last weekend -which have now claimed the lives of five people.

The driver of a green Rover, a woman in her eighties, was arrested yesterday in connection with a fatal road traffic collision in Abergavenny.

The two occupants of a black Saab - Nicholas Charles Fermor (cor) and Susan Caroline Fermor - were killed when their car collided with a Black Subaru Impreza at 12.30pm on Sunday, outside the Hardwick restaurant on the B4589.

It is believed the Rover was on the road at the time of the collision.

On the same day mother-of-two Kaylee Goddard, 20, was killed on Sunday in an accident on the A467, near Abertillery.

She was one of five people in a Ford Scorpio which crashed at the junction of the Roseheyworth Business Park at 12.55am on Sunday.

A 40-year-old man, who was also in the car, was in hospital with serious injuries on Monday.

On Friday Shane Lyndon Jones, 35, from Newport, died after his car crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The incident took place on the A48 near Coedkernew at around 10.20pm.
