AN ABERTILLERY nightclub was granted later opening hours later despite angry objections from nearby residents.

The Arena, in Carmel Street, can now stay open until 1am every day of the week, although owner Andrew Boulton said he only plans to open the club at weekends.

Residents living in nearby streets are dismayed at the decision by Blaenau Gwent council's licensing sub-committee.

They say they already suffer from drunken, noisy revellers who cause damage and even urinate and have sex outside their homes.

Owner Mr Boulton struck a deal with the committee, agreeing several amendments to his original application.

The Arena can now serve alcohol until midnight Monday to Thursday, and until 12.30am Friday to Sunday.

It can play music and show films or sports until 12.20am Monday to Thursday and until 1am Friday to Sunday.

The entry and re-entry cut-off point was extended to 11pm.

Mr Boulton also agreed to improve exterior lighting and will negotiate with Blaenau Gwent council about possible road closures at peak times.

The committee said they considered the responses from residents, but said the agreements were suitable to address their concerns.

The council received 16 letters of objection from residents, but none attended the meeting to raise their concerns.

Speaking after the meeting, Vera Edwards, 85, of King Street, said: "It's awful. I thought they would have turned it down. I can hear the music banging in my room all the time. In the mornings there are glass bottles and condoms in my garden. It's going to get worse now."

Ben York 74, of Chapel Street, said: "It's bad enough here with the current licensing hours. They enjoy themselves but they are making it hell for us. This is terrible."

Mr Boulton's solicitor Kevan Lines said Mr Boulton was "very pleased" with the outcome of the meeting, and said he will continue to work with the police and council.
