POLICE say a baby was found unresponsive and rushed to hospital for treatment following an incident in Newport this afternoon.

It follows reports of a major emergency services presence in a Newport neighbourhood.

There were widespread reports from the Moorland Park and Broadmead Park area in the east of the city of a swarm of blue lights at around 4pm on Sunday.

Police and ambulance vehicles were seen, and an air ambulance helicopter was also called in.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a medical emergency at an address in Broad Mead Park, Newport at around 3.25pm on Sunday, October 23, after a baby was found unresponsive.

"Officers attended, along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service, and the baby was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff for treatment."

The Argus also asked the police about local rumours a dog may have been involved in the incident.

The force spokersperson said "no dogs were involved".

It is understood the majority of those emergency service vehicles have since left, and nothing has been confirmed as to the cause of the incident.
