ONLINE shopping has meant the demise of the Saturday morning shopping trip and a loss of some big high street names along the way. Those who grew up in the 80s and 90s in Newport will fondly remember buying records from Hitman or Our Price, a pick 'n mix from Woolworth and a trip to the local chip shop. Located in Newport Bus Station, you could smell fried chips and egg before you even came to the café. They sold a cone of chips for pennies that provided the perfect warm snack ahead of your shopping trip.

Woolworth pick n mix

Woolworth had a huge store on the corner of Commercial Street and Charles Street selling everything from music to confectionary. So many readers tell us they had a Saturday job here or bought their first record. What are your memories of the building?

Kingsway Centre In-shops and glass lift

Long before Wilko took over two stories of the Kingsway Centre, there existed the 'in-shops'. The rabbit warren of stalls sold numerous goods including clothes, leather jackets, household items and an assorted food stall with broken biscuit bins. Argos was located at one end of the In-shops and The Place to Eat café at the other end.

Bought school uniform in British Home Stores

This UK institution provided many a teenager with a Saturday job and supplied most of the city with a school uniform. It was packed with gift ideas for Christmas and sold items for your home or specials occasions such as weddings. The store had a huge café on the second floor.

Went to ABC Cinema

ABC Cinema in Bridge Street, Newport, stood on the site of the iconic Lyceum Theatre and was a firm favourite in the 80s and 90s. Built in the 1960s, film fans could be seen queuing around the corner to watch the latest blockbuster. The cinema has since been transformed into a Travelodge.
