THERE'S harrowing tales in the latest episode of BBC’s Crash Detectives as police look into two cases where destruction and devastation were left in the wake of criminal activity.

In February 2022, Mason Williams, 28, smashed a stolen motorcycle into a car waiting to move out a junction on Cardiff Road.

Williams later died of his injuries.

In the second incident, a Vauxhall Astra took over another car before hitting a bend in Cwmbran and losing control, causing devastation.

Episode three of series four of Crash Detectives shows unprecedented and harrowing images of what can happen when we lose control on the roads.

The episode starts with a voiceover ominously saying “experienced paramedics are on the way” before crash investigator Dean Burnett is on the scene, looking at the incident which killed Mason Williams in a race against time against the rain that’s washing away evidence.

Mr Burnett’s investigation focuses on a black Volkswagen parked on the side of the road that could have blocked the view of both motorcyclist Williams and the driver of the car he crashed into.

Intricate 3D imaging shows the aftermath of the crash before Mr Burnett tries to drive the route Williams took at his estimated speed of 69mph, however this is abandoned, considered too dangerous to do.

The number plate of the motorcycle causes Mr Burnett concern and rightly so as it’s later revealed the bike was stolen.

To compound matters, Williams was also riding without a licence or insurance.

It was eventually concluded Williams caused the crash and the driver of the Ford Focus walked free.

In the second incident, a Vauxhall Astra is shown decimated in the middle of a road in Cwmbran.

PC Matt Rue described the energy on impact as “staggering” as the car is estimated to have collided with a bus stop in sixth gear after losing control overtaking another vehicle.

It’s estimated the Astra was going at up to 53mph, with the car unstable as it entered into the bend.

It’s later revealed the driver of the Astra had never passed his test, had no insurance and was high on cannabis.

He died of his injuries two days later.
