A PAEDOPHILE branded a “monster” by one of his victims was jailed for 18 years for historical sex offences committed between the 1950s and 1970s.

Terrence Hulme, 87, from Abertillery was found guilty following a trial of 10 counts of rape and three charges of indecent assault against two girls.

The defendant was condemned by Judge Daniel Williams who told him: “Your health is failing but your treatment, that will be a matter for the relevant medical practitioners and not this court.

“The grave nature of your offending does not allow this court to act mercifully towards you at all.

“You have no previous convictions and some people have written saying that you're a good man.

“Those who know you best know that you're anything but a good man.”

He added: “The effect upon your victims has been incalculable.

“They both impressed the court as courageous, truthful and good people.”

One of them read out her victim impact statement.

She told Cardiff Crown Court: “I have tried to suppress the horrors of my early life.

“However, it constantly comes back and haunts me.

“Just watching TV or films with a reference to a sex crime can trigger something and I am back.

“He has not crushed me and the police have helped me to fight back with this legal action.”

Calling him "depraved" and a “monster”, she added: “He is a sick, perverted paedophile.

“No child should have to go through what I have suffered.

“A huge part of my life was taken right for me.”

Hulme’s other victim said she “despised” her attacker.

She told the court that the effect on her life had been “horrendous and traumatising”.

Hulme, of Arael View, had denied the charges against him.

He was found guilty by a jury at Newport Crown Court.

Jeffrey Jones representing him said his client had no previous convictions and had completed his National Service and served in the Territorial Army.

His barrister added: “The defendant has a significant medical condition and is prone to falling and uses a wheelchair.”

Judge Williams said Hulme will have to serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison and must register as a sex offender for life.

After the defendant was taken down to the cells, he told prosecutor Tim Evans: “The court commends the victims’ courage and their fortitude and the court wishes them all the very best for the future which they richly deserve.”
