A Gwent MP is urging the UK government to speed up regulation around the sale and use of e-scooters
Newport East MP Jessica Morden has presented a 10-Minute Rule Bill to the House of Commons asking that “the Secretary of State commissions and publishes a review of the legislation and guidance relating to e-scooters; places a duty on the Secretary of State to promote public awareness of legislation concerning the use of e-scooters; and for related purposes”.
She said: “Residents from across Newport East come to me regularly to share their thoughts on the use of e-scooters in the city.
“Some perspectives are positive – people feel that if properly legislated, and they’re used safely and by the rules of the road, e-scooters could be a valuable travel option in Newport.
“However, many people have a negative view of e-scooters, citing their anti-social use and the fact that riders often wear face coverings and dark clothing, showing no consideration for pedestrians – particularly the elderly and visually impaired.”
The presentation of the Bill was supported by other MPs from across the House, including Ruth Jones, MP for Newport West and Islwyn, and Catherine Fookes, MP for Monmouthshire.
In her speech, Ms Morden highlighted the work of councillors in Newport East in raising this issue, as well as the good work carried out by Gwent Police, telling the Chamber:
The second reading of the Bill is slated for March 14, 2025.
