With Christmas now just over a week away, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all residents in Newport East a peaceful and joyful festive season, filled with happiness.
I’d also like to thank the carers, doctors, nurses, emergency services staff, volunteers, and so many others for whom Christmas is another day of duty, supporting people across our city who need it. We are all so grateful for your service — thank you.
2024 has been quite the year! My office and I have been working hard to support constituents with a whole range of issues.
The change in constituency boundaries following the general election means that we now support residents in more parts of Newport than ever before. Over the last year, we’ve received more than 9,300 enquiries from residents, resulting in more than 4,200 cases being addressed.

It’s been brilliant to see so much wonderful activity happening in the city centre this Christmas.
I thoroughly enjoyed the rescheduled Small Business Saturday events last weekend, and I’m excited to see the Christmas markets in Kingsway and Westgate Square, which add to the city centre’s fantastic collection of independent retailers.
Other areas of the city have also completely embraced the festive spirit.
I’ve particularly enjoyed the post-box toppers created by the incredibly talented Prosecco and Purls group in Caerleon and the Mappa Maindee festive paper cut by the talented Beth Wilkes that’s on display at the Triangle in Maindee.

As always, it’s been wonderful to see so many communities coming together to create festive events. I particularly enjoyed the Lliswerry Baptist Church Christmas event, and of course, the Lliswerry Primary Nursery Christmas concert was fabulous. Thank you to everyone who invited me to enjoy their festive celebrations!
In Westminster, I’ve been raising the issues constituents have shared with me in the House of Commons, with Ministers, and in debates.
Last week, I highlighted concerns about the sale and use of fireworks during a debate. Many residents have contacted me via email and social media to share worries about noise, anti-social behaviour, and its impact on both people and animals.
Last month, I also brought your views on e-scooters to the Chamber when I presented a Ten-Minute Rule Bill asking the government to consider legislation to ensure the safe and proper use of this mode of transport. Thank you again to everyone who reached out to share their thoughts.
Another issue I frequently receive messages about is the conditions at Parc Prison. Relatives of prisoners have shared concerns about facilities, medical assistance, and much more. Last week, I asked the Minister what actions are being taken to address these concerns.
