A LOCAL police force have said their figures do not show an increase in reports of domestic violence during the Christmas period.
This is despite a consensus amongst charities that domestic abuse does spike during the holidays.
Whilst Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year for some, research suggests that there’s often an increase in instances of domestic violence during the holidays.
On the Women’s Aid website, Sarah Benson, CEO of Women’s Aid, said: “December and Christmas is a tough time for women and often the abuse they’re suffering is more frequent and more severe with women disclosing that they have been assaulted, hospitalised, being degraded and called the most horrible names.”
However, Gwent Police have said that they do not see an increase in reports of domestic violence during the festive period.
Whilst Gwent Police don’t see a rise in reports related to domestic abuse during the holidays, this does not mean instances of domestic violence do not increase in the area.
According to the National Centre for Domestic Violence, domestic abuse is a largely hidden crime and often goes unreported.
Detective Superintendent Michelle Chaplin said: “In Gwent, we do not typically see a rise in reports relating to domestic abuse during the festive period."
“We understand that reporting this type of crime can be extremely difficult at any time of the year and that recorded data will never fully capture the extent of domestic abuse."
It is thought that the season's increased financial stress, alcohol consumption and the emphasis on togetherness can all act as triggers and exacerbate already volatile relationships.
Furthermore, the pressure to keep the peace and showcase a happy family may prevent victims from reporting instances of domestic violence during the festive period.
Despite these concerns, Gwent Police are clear that their figures do not reflect any potential increase in cases being reported.
DS Chaplin was keen to make this point very obvious.
She added: “I just want to stress again that we do not see this trend in Gwent, and we encourage anyone who is experiencing this type of crime to report at any time.
"There is support available regardless of the time of year."
Domestic abuse can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, violent or threatening behaviours, controlling or coercive behaviours, economic abuse as well as psychological, emotional, and other forms of abuse.
It’s important to remember the most wonderful time for some can be the most dangerous time for others and support is available no matter the time of year.
Speaking for Gwent Police, DS Chaplin said: “We are committed to supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse and work closely with partners not only to bring offenders to justice but also ensure victims are being supported emotionally and practically.”
