The bijou mid-terrace cottage, considered an ideal place for those looking for privacy, was open for sale to cash buyers only.
Angie Davey, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said this was because the cottage, at 6, School Terrace, Rogerstone, was of "non-standard construction".
But this "snag" failed to deter five bidders who placed a total of 13 bids before the property, with a guide price of £46,000, sold for £57,000.
Angie said: “The historic cottage, in a small terrace originally built for canal workers, could be ideal for someone looking for a hideaway home or perhaps to convert for use as a holiday let or for rental.
“The accommodation currently provides lounge, kitchen/dining room, shower room, utility area and on the first floor one bedroom through to room two.
“The sloping rear garden is currently accessed only via the top road. There is a parking space on the lane opposite the property and there is potential to create additional parking in the front garden subject to the necessary Highways consent.
“Once refurbished we anticipate the cottage could achieve a rental income of approximately £750 per calendar month.
“The property, on a no through road, is adjacent to playing fields and has good transport links via the A467/M4, local rail at nearby Pye Corner and Rogerstone plus national rail links from Newport city centre.”
