Barclays to close Port Talbot and Bargoed branches this week

In 2024, 410 bank branches shut their doors for good, while more than 430 closures have already been marked to take place this year, according to Which?.

Some of these have already taken place, with the likes of Barclays in Morriston, Swansea (July 17); Lloyds in Whitchurch, Cardiff (May 25); and NatWest in Canton and Llanishen (September 11) having closed in recent months.

Barclays to close 2 South Wales branches this week

Barclays is now set to close two more branches in South Wales this week:

• Local Port Talbot (October 28)
• Local Bargoed (October 30)

Barclays said the decision to close the two South Wales branches was due to more customers "banking digitally and meeting us virtually".

A spokesperson said: "When we opened this Barclays Local, we wanted to be nearby so people could speak to us in person.

"We did this even when more and more people were using our app or online resources instead.

"As time has passed, even more customers are banking digitally and meeting us virtually."

Despite the closures, Barclays assured customers that there were still a variety of ways to do their banking, including:

• Online or via the Barclays app
• Over the phone
• Cash machines
• The Post Office

Other South Wales bank branches closing before the end of 2025

Six South Wales bank branches have already closed in September and October:

• NatWest - Cwmbran (September 1) - CLOSED
• NatWest - Canton (September 11) - CLOSED
• NatWest - Llanishen (September 11) - CLOSED
• Lloyds - Monmouth (September 16) - CLOSED
• Halifax - Monmouth (September 16) - CLOSED
• Halifax - Carmarthen (October 6) - CLOSED

HSBC has said it will not be closing any of its UK branches until at least 2026, while Nationwide has promised to keep all its branches open until at least the start of 2028.
