The M48 Severn Bridge has been closed in both directions between Junction 1 (Aust) and Junction 2 (Chepstow) as strong winds continue to affect the Severn Estuary.
The closure comes as the Met Office issues a yellow wind warning for Wales and South West England, in force from 04:00 to 23:59 on Thursday, 25 December, with forecasters warning of gusts widely reaching 45–55mph and up to 65mph along exposed coasts and hills
National Highways confirmed the closure after wind speeds exceeded safe operating thresholds for the structure, prompting a full shutdown for the safety of motorists. Similar closures have previously been implemented when gusts surpass 50mph.

The closure affects one of the two major crossings between England and Wales, with all traffic being diverted to the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, which remains open at this time.
High winds pose a significant risk to vehicles particularly high‑sided lorries on the exposed span of the M48 crossing. National Highways routinely monitors wind speeds on both Severn bridges and implements closures when conditions become unsafe.
A previous closure under similar conditions saw traffic diverted to the M4 crossing, causing delays across the wider South Wales and South Gloucestershire network.
What drivers should do
Motorists travelling between Wales and the South West of England are advised to:
- Use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as an alternative route
- Allow extra time for journeys, particularly during peak travel periods
- Follow updates from National Highways and @2SevernBridges on X
National Highways has published further details and live updates on its travel alerts page and dedicated Severn Bridges information hub.
The M48 is expected to remain closed until wind speeds fall to safe levels. Drivers are urged to check conditions before travelling, especially with weather warnings in force across Wales and the South West.
