A man who lost his job is now celebrating success.

Richard Collins was made redundant from his job as a sales manager and decided to turn his passion for coffee into a new career.

His cafe, The Rich Bean Coffee Shop, has received a five-star hygiene rating.

The business, based at Caerleon Rugby Club on Broadway, opened in 2024 and received the highest possible rating from Newport City Council following its first inspection earlier this month.

Mr Collins said: "I'm delighted and very proud to say that we've been awarded 5 stars.

"Thank you to my team, who are a young bunch of individuals and do a very good job, especially at busy times.

"Thank you to my customers who keep my business going and thank you to Caerleon Rugby Club members who make it all possible. Thank you."

The rating follows an inspection by environmental health officers on January 14, 2026, who assessed hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities, and management of food safety.

Mr Collins started the business with help from Business Wales, receiving start-up guidance and a £2,000 Barriers Grant that supported his transition from redundancy to entrepreneurship.

The coffee shop has built a loyal following amongst local residents, with customers praising the quality of service, food and beverages.

One reviewer wrote: "Great service, great food and coffee was fab.

"Such great little find and will certainly be back soon."

The team has also been commended for its personalised service and willingness to accommodate special requests.

The cafe operates Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 3:30pm, with a 9:30am start on Sundays.

It serves sustainably sourced coffee and locally produced goods, alongside freshly prepared food options.

Less than 18 months after opening, Mr Collins is now exploring opportunities to expand across Newport.

The coffee shop’s success builds on the strong foundation established at Caerleon RFC.
