Customers have rallied around an independent bakery after it received a single one-star review that they said "knocked the wind out of us".

O’Connell’s Bakery, based in Abergavenny, received the negative rating through a third-party platform, prompting an outpouring of praise and support from loyal customers online.

The reviewer claimed a delivery never arrived, despite tracking confirming receipt of the parcel.

O’Connell’s Bakery said the review was "next-level dishonest" and "damaging".

The bakery warned that a single false review can hit visibility, trust and sales and make owners question whether to keep selling by post at all.

In a January 28 social media post, O’Connell’s cautioned that one false review can impact trust, sales, and visibility, potentially forcing businesses to reconsider offering postal services.

Fans quickly came to the bakery’s defence, flooding social media with supportive comments.

One regular customer described the bakes as "too good" and "amazing," while another said O’Connell’s treats were "worth travelling for."

A fellow baker publicly awarded them "an extra star," and a customer in a local group said they had driven from Bracknell to visit after seeing the bakery online, saying the trip "was worth it".

Despite the lone one-star review, the bakery enjoys a strong reputation elsewhere, holding a 4.7 out of 5 rating from visitors on Restaurant Guru for its Abergavenny site.

Customers often praise the bakery’s generous portions, indulgent tray bakes, and custard slices—some of which they describe as the best they’ve ever tasted.

The latest delivery dispute does not appear to have dented demand for O’Connell’s postal service, which offers nationwide delivery of tray bakes and "mystery box" selections.

In-store, the bakery’s £5 tray-bake deals have also continued to sell out quickly.

Freshly cut trays are often placed straight into the display cabinet to meet demand.

The bakery remains popular both locally and further afield, with more than 41,000 Facebook likes and thousands of followers engaging with its posts about new bakes, postal drops, and shop updates.

For many supporters, the one-star review has become a rallying point—a reminder that a single negative comment does not reflect the experience of most customers.
