South Wales braces itself for 12 hours of heavy rain today

The weather warning is in effect from 12:00 pm today (February 9) until 11:59 pm this evening.

South Wales is expected to be hit with heavy rain on Monday afternoon and evening that could lead to flooding and travel disruption.

Areas expected to be affected include Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, and Monmouthshire.

The Met Office has said: “Bands of rain and heavy showers will move east across southern parts of England and Wales during Monday afternoon and evening. 10-15 mm of rain is likely fairly widely with 20-30 mm in some places exposed to the strong south to southeasterly winds.”
The heavy rain could lead to flooding, and the Met Office offers the following advice:

“Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If it is, consider creating a flood plan and putting together an emergency flood kit.

“If you’re driving, check road conditions to avoid delays. If you use public transport, look at bus and train timetables and adjust your travel plans if needed.

“Be prepared for possible power cuts. Gather essentials like torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other items you might need.

“Weather warnings can change quickly. When a warning is issued, the Met Office advises keeping up to date with the latest forecast for your area.”
