Why the King described the Ponthir House Inn as 'lovely'

A traditional pub with historic charm and royal praise is winning hearts.

Ponthir House Inn, located on Caerleon Road in Ponthir and dating back to 1710, once received kind words from King Charles III, who described the pub as having "a lovely feel" during his time as Prince of Wales.

The 18th-century inn has built a reputation for warm hospitality and quality food.

One TripAdvisor reviewer said: "Lamb was perfectly pink and tender.

"Beef was amazing.

"Cauliflower cheese was perfectly cooked and the pigs in blankets were a lovely addition."

A diner posting in the Caerleon community group on Facebook in February 2026 agreed.

They said: "My husband and I tried their beef roast, it was absolutely delicious."

Other menu favourites include the steak baguette, described as "spot-on — tender, perfectly seasoned, and packed with flavour," and the fish and chips, praised for having "the lightest, crispiest batter on skinless fish."

Visitors consistently praise the service, describing the staff as "friendly and accommodating."

One reviewer wrote: "The staff really make the whole experience even more enjoyable.

"They're so friendly and accommodating and service definitely comes with a smile."

Trinity, a member of the bar staff, was singled out in a November 2025 review for being "friendly, attentive, and genuinely added to the atmosphere."

Another reviewer called attention to the "very friendly helpful staff, nice setting and pleasant atmosphere."

The interior has been described as cosy and welcoming.

With low beams, exposed stonework, and cosy connecting rooms, the Ponthir House Inn oozes character.

The walls feature images of nearby landmarks, while the dining room is decorated with a map showing Caerleon, Monnow Bridge, and Llanthony Priory Gatehouse.

The venue is also a favourite for special occasions and private gatherings.

A TripAdvisor user described a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for 24 guests in a December 2025 review.

They wrote: "The food was excellent in its taste, presentation and service."

Birthday celebrations featured in Instagram posts from February 2026.

One guest commented: "Food and service as usual was delicious."

Under new management since May 2024, the pub continues to maintain high standards.

It currently holds a five out of five food hygiene rating.

Ponthir House Inn is dog-friendly and equipped with outdoor seating, parking, wheelchair access, and highchairs.

It is open from midday to 11pm Tuesday to Thursday, midday to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and midday to 10.30pm on Sundays.

The pub is closed on Mondays.
