A pub has achieved a top food hygiene rating in its first 18 months under new ownership.

The Goldcroft Inn in Caerleon reached the highest possible score of five stars in a recent inspection, a significant improvement from its previous two-star rating.

Co-owners Glenn and Georgina took over the former coaching inn in late 2024 and immediately began raising standards across the business.

Their efforts focused on upgrading both the front and back of house, improving food handling routines, record-keeping, and staff training.

Specific attention was given to food safety, cleaning schedules, and personal hygiene.

The couple said: "We’ve only gone and done it.

"Thank you to all our amazing staff an of course the awesome kitchen staff for helping get this score."

The rating was awarded under the national food hygiene rating scheme, which scores businesses from zero to five based on food handling, cleanliness, building condition and safety systems.

A two-star rating means improvement is needed, while a five-star rating reflects "very good" standards.

Customers have already noticed a broader transformation since the pair took charge, with regulars mentioning friendlier service, more consistent food, and a warmer atmosphere.

The pub has also become a spot for Sunday lunches, family gatherings, and celebrations.

The owners said they plan to maintain and build on these standards through continuous staff training and service improvements as they enter their second full year at the helm.

The improvements in hygiene are seen by customers as part of a larger shift in the pub’s overall offering, which also includes a busier events calendar.

The five-star rating offers further reassurance to diners and drinkers alike, marking a visible sign of progress for the site.

Glenn and Georgina said that teamwork has been key to their success and that they are committed to keeping standards high as they look to the future.

The Goldcroft Inn is continuing its efforts to grow both its food and drink business.
