A pizza branch in Newport has been awarded the highest possible food hygiene rating.

Fireaway Pizza in Newport received a rating of five, labelled 'Very Good,' following a recent inspection by Newport City Council under the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

The rating reflects excellence in food handling, cleanliness and safety management at the city-centre takeaway, which is part of the growing Fireaway franchise in the UK.

The restaurant, opened in November 2025, is owned by brothers Ashish and Yash Parekh who are both local to the Newport and wider South Wales area.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme assesses businesses in three key areas: food handling, cooking and storage; cleanliness and condition of the premises, including facilities like ventilation and handwashing; and the effectiveness of food safety management systems in place.

A rating of five indicates that Fireaway Pizza Newport performed "very good" across all categories.

More than 1,400 outlets in Newport, including cafés, restaurants, schools and care homes, are currently listed in the scheme.

The public can use the ratings to make informed decisions about where to eat or order takeaway.

Businesses are required to display their green rating sticker prominently at the front of the premises or at customer entrances.

If businesses are dissatisfied with their rating, they can appeal or pay for a re-rating visit once improvements have been made.

Fireaway Pizza Newport’s rating, however, confirms that the business is already meeting the highest standards expected by food safety officers.

The Newport branch’s success is part of a wider trend for the Fireaway brand, with many of its locations across England and Wales holding scores of four or five.

While ratings are assessed on a site-by-site basis and can vary between outlets, Newport’s top rating offers reassurance to customers.

It comes at a time when hygiene remains a key consideration for households deciding where to eat or order food.

The food hygiene scheme does not assess the quality or price of the food, but focuses solely on safety and cleanliness.

It offers customers a snapshot of how seriously a premises takes its legal responsibilities.
