Employment in Newport has shown promising signs of stabilisation.
The number of employees on payroll in February reached 73,245, according to analysis by employment and pay app WageSight using Office for National Statistics payroll data.
Although this represents a small year-on-year decrease of 48 employees, or 0.1 per cent, there was a slight month-on-month rise in February, with six additional employees reported on payroll.
Paul Hebden, director at WageSight, said: "Although employment in Newport remains lower than a year ago, recent month-on-month figures suggest some stabilisation in recent months.
"Whether this marks a genuine turning point or a temporary pause in job losses will become clearer over the next few months."
Newport currently ranks ninth out of 22 Welsh authorities for year-on-year employment change according to the latest data.
The figures reflect a mixed employment landscape across Wales, with some areas showing improvement and others continuing to experience declines.
Nationally, employment trends have also remained uncertain over the past year.
The data follows a period of ongoing economic uncertainty, but the recent stabilisation in Newport may indicate the beginnings of renewed employer confidence.
