Care-experienced young people, who were supported by Newport City Council, were among 500 from across the UK who took part in a national football tournament.
The event was held at the MK Dons Stadium, and brought together people aged 16 to 25 from 36 teams with Newport being the only Welsh local authority represented.
Byron James, of The GAP Wales, said: "A fantastic opportunity and a brilliant day for everyone involved."
Two Newport teams of eight players each, Newport Ballers A and B, took part after being shortlisted through a collaboration between Newport City Council’s Youth Justice Team, Newport Live Positive Futures, and The GAP Wales.
Participants were selected based on regular attendance at football sessions and eligibility for the tournament, and included young people supported by social workers and the Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children team.
Players trained in four sessions focused on building fitness, teamwork, and confidence.
The team left Newport at 5.30am on the day of the tournament with supporters also making the journey to cheer them on.
Jay McCabe, of Newport City Council Children’s Services, said the event was an "awesome opportunity".
Carly Buchanan, one of the competitors, was named Player of the Tournament by Dallaglio Rugby Works.
Newport Ballers B finished fourth in their group with one win and one draw.
Newport Ballers A topped their group with one win and two draws and reached the quarter-finals.
Lucy Donovan, of Newport Live, said: "A huge amount of effort went into making sure young people could be part of the experience, and it really was a day to remember."
The success of the day was made possible through collaborative support.
Sponsorship from Terry Edgell at Premier Forest enabled the purchase of a Newport football kit, Newport Live provided hoodies for all players, and Newport City Council covered transport and food costs.
