A free family day out at Fferm Gelli near Blackwood left me wondering why I hadn't visited sooner.
The charming animal farm offers visitors the chance to escape into the countryside, meet adorable animals and enjoy a relaxing day out without the hefty price tag.
It's an ideal destination for families looking to keep costs down during the school holidays, and the best part? Entry and parking are completely free, meaning visitors only need to pay if they want to buy bags of animal feed or enjoy food and drinks from the on-site café.

Having heard plenty of positive reviews, I decided to see what all the fuss was about—and it certainly didn't disappoint.
One of the first things I noticed was just how peaceful the farm felt.
In a world where we're constantly rushing from one place to the next, it was refreshing to spend a couple of hours doing something so simple.
Standing in the fresh countryside air, surrounded by rolling hills, birdsong and happy families, felt like a genuine escape from everyday life.

The farm is home to a wide variety of friendly animals including horses, goats, pigs, rabbits and its much-loved Highland cows.
One of my favourite moments came almost immediately after arriving when an incredibly friendly horse wandered over to the fence looking for attention. It happily accepted plenty of strokes and even seemed more than happy to pose for a few photos.

The fluffy chickens wandering around the farm were another unexpected highlight, with their unusual appearance making them impossible to ignore.
Fferm Gelli has clearly been designed with families in mind. There's an undercover play area complete with ride-on tractors, spotless toilet facilities, an on-site café and even a camping area for those wanting to extend their stay.

After spending time with the animals, I headed to the café, which is well worth budgeting for.
I ordered one of the freshly made waffles, topped with strawberries and generous drizzles of chocolate sauce.
The waffle was perfectly crisp on the outside, wonderfully soft and fluffy in the middle, while the fresh fruit balanced the sweetness perfectly.

Alongside a cold drink, it was exactly what I needed after walking around the farm.
While the café and animal feed come at an extra cost, the fact you can spend hours exploring the farm without paying an entrance fee makes it fantastic value for money.
