Police appeal for CCTV after woman dies in Newport disturbance

The incident took place on St Vincent Road in Newport during the early hours of Saturday, July 18, when police were called to reports of a disturbance outside a property. A woman was later pronounced dead nearby on Chepstow Road.

A 66-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody, as detectives continue enquiries and support the victim’s family. The woman’s family is being supported by specialist officers.

Chief Superintendent John Davies said: “We understand that reports of this nature are deeply unsettling and distressing for our communities.

“A man, who was arrested at the scene, is currently in police custody, and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area, while our officers continue to carry out enquiries. If you have any concerns or have any information, please don’t hesitate to speak to them.”

Police officers, including forensic teams, remain at the scene alongside firefighters as detailed investigations continue, with a number of nearby roads — including Corporation Road, Clarence Place and St Vincent Road — currently closed.

Multiple forensic officers have been seen working along St Vincent Road, with uniformed officers maintaining a visible presence across surrounding streets. Resources have been drawn from across the wider area to support the investigation, with cordons in place as enquiries continue.

Residents have described their shock at the incident. One woman said: “I heard it was a murder. It’s frightening that this has happened so close to town.”

Another man added: “Police have been here for hours and aren’t showing any signs of leaving. They’ve been here since the early hours, around 2am.”

The incident has left the community shaken, with officers advising residents on St Vincent Road to remain in their homes where possible, warning that those who leave may not be allowed to return for some time while enquiries continue.
