Ammanford Glan yr Afon house fire sees woman arrested

Fire crews battled a major house at Glan yr Afon at 2.56pm on Saturday, August 8, with crews from Tumble, Pontardawe, Llanelli and Morriston sent to the scene, as Ammanford firefighters were attending a separate emergency.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 3.19pm and found a home measuring 15 metres by seven metres on fire.

A ground monitor, three hose reel jets, two main jets and a thermal imaging camera were used to extinguish the fire.

An aerial turntable ladder from Morriston was also used to fight the flames from above.

The incident required a multi-agency response, with Dyfed-Powys Police and Wales and West Utilities were also in attendance.

Fire crews remained at the scene until 6.06pm.

Now, a person has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said:

Dyfed-Powys Police attended the scene of a fire at a property in Glan Yr Afon in Ammanford at approximately 3.15pm on Saturday (8/8) along with colleagues from the fire service.

No one was present within the property at the time, and nobody was injured.

A woman aged 52 and from Ammanford was arrested on suspicion of arson and has been released under investigation.

A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire Service said: "At 2.56pm on Saturday, August 8th, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Tumble, Pontardawe, Llanelli and Morriston Fire Stations were mobilised to an incident at Glan yr Afon in Ammanford.

"At the time of the call, crews from Ammanford Fire Station were already responding to another emergency incident.

"As a result, the nearest available fire appliances were mobilised to ensure a response was provided as quickly as possible.

"The first fire crew arrived at the scene at 3.19 pm.

"The crews responded to a fire involving one domestic property, measuring approximately 15 metres by 7 metres.

"One ground monitor, three hose reel jets, two main jets and one thermal imaging camera were utilised to extinguish the fire.

"Crews were supported by the attendance of the aerial turntable ladder appliance from Morriston Fire Station to tackle the fire from above.

"This incident required a multi-agency response, with Dyfed-Powys Police and Wales and West Utilities also in attendance.

"The crews left the scene at 6.06pm".

Sarah Burgess, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Service Manager for Ammanford said:

“We were called to reports of a fire at a property in the Glan Yr Afon area of Ammanford on Saturday (8 Aug) and immediately sent a team of engineers to the scene. 

“On arrival, we found that there had been severe structural damage to the property which had spread to a nearby gas service pipe, causing it to leak. The emergency services were in control of the scene, and we worked with them to make the area safe.

“The cause of the fire is still being investigated; however, we can confirm that it is not related to the gas mains network.”
