A planning application has been approved by Newport City Council to convert the upper floors of a High Street building into an arts venue and creative studios.

The scheme, located above LePub at 14-15 High Street, will see the first floor transformed into a bookable arts venue, with the second and third floors converted into co-working and private studio spaces.

The plans also include a partial rear extension to house a new stair core, internal alterations to enlarge the arts venue, and the addition of a roof terrace.

The extension will be finished in standing seam metal cladding and will measure 4.7 metres deep, 3.5 metres wide, and 3.3 metres high.

The roof terrace will feature bifold doors, a 2.5-metre acoustic fence, and a modular living wall.

The council has set conditions to protect the building’s character, including requirements for cast metal rainwater goods on the principal elevation and the use of DOFF or TORC cleaning methods to preserve the brickwork.

These measures are intended to maintain the building’s contribution to the wider conservation area.

All works must be carried out in accordance with the approved plans, and, prior to the installation of any replacement rainwater goods on the principal elevation, details of a cast metal replacement must be submitted to and approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority; development shall only commence in accordance with the agreed details and retained for the duration of the use.
