Newport’s Majestic Ballroom opened to a sold-out crowd in May 1958, offering dancing six nights a week.
The Stow Hill venue was originally known as Tredegar Hall and operated as a theatre. By the late 1950s, it had been changed into a dance hall with a large stage, a chalked dance floor and coloured lights.
During the 1960s, local and national bands played there. Archive photographs show the building in May 1958, when its doors opened for the first time.
The archive describes it as a luxury dance hall with wallpaper by the same designers as Buckingham Palace, in glacier blue. A spacious foyer and dance floor could accommodate 650 dancers. Visitors could also use a balcony café and seating area. Dances took place nightly from 7.30pm to 11pm, with tea dances on Saturday afternoons.
