The family of a father of 10 whose death in Welshpool led to a man being charged with murder have paid tribute to a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was "our everything".

Young John Mongan, 49, died after emergency services were called to Church Street, Welshpool, in the early hours of June 28.

His family have now spoken of their devastation at the loss of a man they described as a loving family figure who always put others first.

In a tribute, they said: "In loving memory of our Young John Mongan who went to God's heavenly kingdom on the 28th of June 2026 aged 49.

"He was a family man who would do anything for us and would never leave his children or family short of anything.

"Our lives have changed in a blink of an eye and will never be the same again."

The family said Mr Mongan was a "best friend, idol and protector" to his children and had been devoted to his wife Margaret.

"To his sons; John, Michael, Christy, Ned, David, Bernie and his daughters; Staceymarie, Charlotte, Megan and Annalise, he was one of a kind, a best friend, idol, and their protector, they are heartbroken and miss him every day.

"To his wife, Margaret, he was everything, and their lives have changed in a blink of an eye."

They added that he adored his grandchildren and would be remembered throughout the family for generations.

"As a grandfather he loved the ground his grandchildren walked on.

"His name will live on in all our family, and in the words of his children 'you will never be forgotten daddy'.

"Young John Mongan, you were our everything."

Mr Mongan, who lived in Walsall, died after an incident in Welshpool town centre at around 1.15am on June 28.

An inquest opening hearing at Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard he suffered a provisional cause of death of blunt injury to the face and head.

Coroner Andrew Morse was told Mr Mongan had been involved in a physical altercation before losing consciousness and dying at the scene.

The inquest was opened and adjourned pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Martin Slezak, 23, of Stanley Street, Welshpool, has denied murdering Mr Mongan.

Appearing at Caernarfon Crown Court by video link from HMP Berwyn last week, Slezak entered a not guilty plea to murder before Mr Justice Nicklin KC.

The court heard the case is expected to go to trial on November 9, with proceedings due to last two weeks.

Slezak was remanded in custody until the trial.
