Red water in Withybush Woods prompts NRW investigation

The incident was reported on a local Facebook group by a woman walking in the area Thursday morning. She contacted Natural Resources Wales after seeing the discoloured water.

The incident prompted speculation from some residents, who questioned whether the nearby abattoir could be involved. However, the cause remains unconfirmed.

One resident wrote: “I can no longer walk there, the smell is revolting and I also have seen this, shameful and very sad.”

Another described the situation as "absolutely disgusting".

A local dog walker claimed they had previously reported similar incidents, adding: “I have reported similar incidents at this location. The most recent last month. I walk my dog around here a couple of times a week. I would warn all of you not to let your dogs drink out of this brook. I had to put my last one down due to her lungs and body being badly contaminated.”

Natural Resources Wales said an environment officer attended the site promptly after receiving the report.

Its comment added: “An environment officer attended the site promptly, by which time the stream was running clear. No odour or fish kill was detected.”

Officers were due to return this morning to continue investigations.

The agency said: “We will take any appropriate enforcement action necessary in line with our enforcement policy.”

There is no confirmation of pollution source, harm to wildlife or links to the abattoir.
