A man has been seriously injured after a substance was thrown at him in Crosskeys last week. 

The incident happened on Salisbury Street at around 7.45pm on Thursday, September 3.

A 38-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

A 17-year-old man from Wattsville was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a controlled class B drug.

He has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

Gwent Police officers were assisted by crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and the Welsh Ambulance Service. 

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of an unknown substance being thrown over a person on Salisbury Street, Crosskeys at around 7.45pm on Thursday 3 September.

"Officers attended alongside personnel from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service.

"A 38-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

"A 17-year-old man from Wattsville was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a controlled class B drug; he has since been released on conditional bail as enquiries continue.

"The substance has been tested and there is no ongoing risk posed to members of the community.

Gwent Police confirmed the substance has since been tested and poses no ongoing risk to the public.

Members of the public who were in the Salisbury Street area on Thursday evening, between 7.30pm and 8.15pm, who believe they may have information that could be useful to the investigation is being asked to get in touch with Gwent Police.
