A £3.6 million funding boost is paving the way for safer walking and cycling routes.
The improvements are planned for the route between Llanfoist and Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, and will support easier, greener journeys between Abergavenny town centre, Castle Meadows, and surrounding communities.
Monmouthshire County Council is developing the scheme with funding from the Cardiff Capital Region’s Regional Transport Fund.
Councillor Sara Burch, cabinet member for rural affairs, housing, and tourism at Monmouthshire County Council, said: "This is about making everyday journeys easier for local people.
"Whether residents are travelling to work, school, the shops or Castle Meadows, these improvements will help make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible.
"I am pleased we are able to do the much-needed road resurfacing alongside the new pedestrian crossings and other improvements.
"There will be some disruption while works are carried out, but we’ll all see a big benefit when it’s completed.
"By improving the links between Llanfoist and Abergavenny, we can give more people a real choice in how they travel."
The scheme focuses on the route between The Cutting in Llanfoist and the new active travel bridge, which is currently under construction.
Work will address long-standing issues along Merthyr Road, including narrow footways, limited crossings, and a lack of cycling infrastructure.
Following public and stakeholder consultation, plans have been finalised to upgrade the road and footway from The Cutting and Waitrose roundabout along Merthyr Road to the existing and future bridge.
Improvements will include upgraded crossings, accessible dropped kerbs, improved footway continuity, a shared-use path, and resurfacing.
Construction of the additional links is currently planned for winter 2026 to spring 2027.
The council says the improvements will help reduce car dependency and support its wider goals for sustainable travel.
