A new crime thriller set in the shadow of SAS selection is set for release.
The Honoured Dead is the ninth DI Fagan thriller by Welsh author Jason Chapman and will be published on September 19.
It follows Detective Inspector Marc Fagan as he investigates the death of a young woman during the gruelling SAS selection process in Bannau Brycheiniog.
Mr Chapman said: "The storyline not only focuses on the punishing SAS selection program but also exposes the trauma soldiers suffer who have served their country.
"I have great respect for our men and women of the UK armed forces and the duties they have to undertake."
The investigation takes DI Fagan and DI Steph Rorke across key locations including Brecon Police Station, Cwrt y Gollen, Sennybridge, and Credenhill in Hereford.
Mr Chapman said: "At its heart is the loss of a young soldier and a question with relevance far beyond the armed forces: when does loyalty become an excuse for silence?"
He said one of the biggest joys of writing the DI Fagan series is setting stories in the Welsh valleys.
Mr Chapman said: "Fagan is a veteran detective who returns to Abergavenny after a career on Merseyside.
"His investigations reveal the darker side of a Welsh market town and its surrounding valleys, where familiar streets and landmarks carry secrets of their own."
The author said the series draws on wider themes such as Welsh history, the 1980s miners’ strike, and the dangers of emerging technologies like AI.
These issues are woven into personal stories that reflect the impact of past and present on individuals and communities.
Mr Chapman balances writing with a full-time factory job, often working on his novels in the early hours before starting his shift.
Although The Honoured Dead uses real locations, all characters and the central investigation are fictional.
