Long awaited resurfacing works have began on Malpas Road as part of Newport City Council's Fixing Our Roads programme.

The work began on Monday, September 14 and it is expected to continue until Saturday, September 19.

A temporary road closure will be in place between 8pm and 5am from September 15 to September 16 on Malpas Road between the M4 slip road and Bettws Lane.

Further carriageway resurfacing works will take place from September 16 to September 17 on Malpas Road between the M4 slip road and the Pillmawr Road interchange, and between the Bettws Lane interchange and the M4 roundabout, with a temporary road closure in place between 8pm and 5am.

Additional resurfacing works are scheduled from September 17 to September 19 on Malpas Road between the M4 slip road and the Pillmawr Road interchange, with a temporary road closure between 8pm and 5am.

The southbound side of this section was resurfaced earlier this year in May.

Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will remain available throughout.

Residents in the Blaen-y-Pant estate will only be able to access the area via Bettws Lane, while Bettws Lane itself will be accessible from the north via Malpas Road.

Graig Park Estate will remain accessible throughout the works, while Hollybush Avenue will only be accessible via Westfield Way.

Residents and businesses on Old Malpas Road will be provided with entry and exit opportunities wherever possible.

Fire crews at Malpas Fire Station will be able to respond to emergencies at all times.

Bus services using Malpas Road will be affected, with passengers advised to check with their operator for updated information.

The council has warned that the works will generate noise and dust and has advised drivers to allow extra travel time in the Malpas and Bettws areas.

In July, Newport residents told the South Wales Argus that parts of Malpas Road had been in poor condition for years, with large potholes, uneven surfaces and repeated patch repairs.

Gwyn Jenkins, a resident, described the roads as resembling a "patchwork quilt of repairs" and said drivers were regularly forced to slow down to avoid damaged sections.
