A man who stole more than £343,000 from two employers has been ordered to pay back more than £4000.
Benjamin Ferrar, 49, of Nightingale Close, Plymouth, attended a proceeds of crime hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday morning, September 15.
The Recorder of Cardiff, Her Honour Judge Lloyd-Clarke, issued a confiscation order of £4,569.81.
Ferrar was also ordered to pay his previous employers Bensons for Beds in Cwmbran £3345.74 in compensation and Carlyon Bay Hotel in St Austell £1304.07 in compensation.
The court heard how the compensation was to be paid within three months, otherwise he could face a default sentence of four months imprisonment.
Judge Lloyd-Clarke also ordered Ferrar to pay a surcharge of £187.
In a hearing held at Newport Crown Court earlier this year, on Friday, January 30, the court heard how Ferrar stole £330,000 while working at Bensons for Beds in Cwmbran.
He stole £138,000 on September 18, 2024 before returning the next day to take another £195,000.
The theft was carried out by him processing refunds to three cards he had.
Because many of these transactions were eventually declined by banks, the amount he got away with from Bensons for Beds was £13,889.
Some of the cash he managed to get away with was spent on a hospitality package for a Liverpool v Manchester City football match.
While these offences were carried out, Ferrar was also under investigation for stealing £10,873.99 from Carlyon Bay Hotel when he previously worked as a night porter.
Between September 1, 2022 and September 11, 2022 he again processed repayments to himself, and some of this cash was used to fund a holiday.
Ferrar was described as a “chronic alcoholic” who drinks around 300 units of alcohol a week in around four-and-a-half bottles of wine a day.
The court heart that his alcoholism may have been rooted in childhood trauma as he witnessed the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.
The tragedy claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool fans following a crush at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield on April 15, 1989 during their side FA Cup semi-final match with Nottingham Forest.
