Overnight resurfacing works are set to begin on a major route next week.

The northbound section of Malpas Road in Newport, between Pillmawr Road and the A4042 roundabout, will be closed for resurfacing from Monday, September 21, to Friday, September 25.

Works will take place each night from 8pm to 5am.

A Newport City Council spokesman said: "These activities are likely to generate noise and dust.

"This is unavoidable, however, we will make every effort to minimise this as much as possible.

"Please allow extra time for your journey if you are travelling within the Malpas and Bettws areas during this time."

The resurfacing forms part of the council’s ongoing ‘Fixing Our Roads’ programme and will be carried out in two sections.

Section three covers the northbound stretch between Pillmawr Road and Westfield Gardens, with work scheduled for Monday and Tuesday nights.

During this period, the junction of Westfield Drive and Malpas Road will be closed.

Access to Westfield Drive will be available via Westfield Way or Russell Drive, which can be reached from the southbound side of Malpas Road via the A4042.

There will be no vehicle access to Westfield Gardens during the works, though vehicles already in the area will be able to exit northbound onto Malpas Road.

Section four covers the northbound carriageway from Llewellyn Grove to the A4042 roundabout, with resurfacing planned for Tuesday through to Friday night.

Residents will be able to access Llewellyn Grove and Llewellyn Walk from the south, but will not be able to exit onto Malpas Road while resurfacing is underway.

Almond Drive will remain accessible from both directions, but vehicles will only be able to exit southbound onto Malpas Road.

Access to Whittle Drive and Oliphant Circle will be maintained via Russell Drive and Edison Ridge.

Bus services that use Malpas Road will be affected and travellers are advised to check with their service provider for updates.

The southbound side of Malpas Road will remain open throughout the northbound works.

Resurfacing of the southbound carriageway, between the A4042 roundabout and Pillmawr Road, is expected to take place the following week, though these dates are yet to be confirmed.
