Newport City Council's CCTV team recorded more than 380 incidents or requests for assistance during July and August.

The team, which supports Gwent Police, was busiest with requests to help with missing person searches.

They also monitored 57 incidents including instances where there were concerns for the safety of an individual.

Councillor Jason Hughes, cabinet member for communities, said: "Many CCTV systems are used mainly to provide footage after an incident has taken place.

"In Newport, cameras are monitored in real time by trained operators who can alert the police and other emergency services as incidents unfold."

He added that the current CCTV system, which has not been upgraded for several years, is set to be enhanced as part of a £350,000 investment in increased safety measures in the city centre.

Work to upgrade CCTV is expected to be completed this year.
