A new Welsh-medium secondary school could be coming to Caerphilly.
The proposal, due to be discussed by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet on September 24, 2026, would see the creation of a standalone school on the Y Gwyndy site from September 2027.
It currently operates as a satellite campus of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni.
Councillor Carol Andrews, cabinet member for education, said: "The proposal to create two separate secondary schools is the most viable and sustainable solution, delivering financial stability while protecting educational standards, maintaining curriculum breadth, and minimising disruption to pupils, staff, and the wider community."
The council says the current split-site arrangement presents operational and organisational challenges.
If approved, the plan would end the current setup and establish an independent school at Y Gwyndy.
Rising demand for Welsh-medium education in the borough has led to the proposal.
At present, Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni is the only Welsh-medium secondary school serving the area.
The plan supports the council’s broader commitment to Welsh-medium education and has already been reviewed by the Education and Social Services Scrutiny Committee.
Councillor Andrews said: "It is important that parents get the chance to have their say."
