Several Newport footpaths will close this week for vegetation clearance and maintenance work.

Newport City Council said the temporary order covers paths along the Crumlin Arm and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

The closure will remain in force for up to six months, or until the work is complete, whichever comes first.

The Crumlin Arm section includes footpaths 384/12/1, 384/15/1, 384/16/1, 408/3/1 and 408/4/1, running from Brickyard Lane to Barrack Hill.

The canal section includes footpaths 387/24/1, 387/26/1, 387/27/1, 387/32/1, 398/1/1 and 408/6/1, between M4 Junction 26 at Malpas and the Torfaen county boundary.

The council said there is no alternative route.

A “stop and pass” system will operate where possible, but heavy machinery and narrow sections mean there will be times without through access.

Warning signs will be placed at key entry points when access is unavailable.

The notice, dated September 17, was issued by Newport City Council.
