When you think “Newport city centre,” you may be forgiven for not immediately thinking of the greenery that crops up in various planters and patches throughout the city.

Newport City Council brought these green displays to light on October 16, with a social media post simply highlighting them and asking residents if they had spotted them.

It is easy for many to miss them on the morning commute or when running errands, with our heads down and focus on the task at hand but the Council is determined to not let them slip into obscurity.

In the post, they said: “Our hardworking plant nursery team help brighten the city with seasonal planting, transforming functional and safety street furniture into colourful features that enhance our streets and public spaces.”

Commenters were quick to share their pleasure surrounding these displays, with the response proving to be overwhelmingly positive.

Donna Brogan said: “I always comment on how beautiful our cities flowers are - always a great job.”

Heather Daniel agrees, saying: “They are superb - every year they come up with the BEST floral displays.”

Pamela Linton said it is “always a pleasure to visit Newport and be welcomed by the beautiful flowers.

“There are always negative comments about Newport. There are many things to be positive about, and the floral displays are one of them.”

Rich Jones simply believes: “Newport council gardeners are fantastic.”

Some residents, like Martin Davies, reflected on their time working in the glass houses in Belle Vue Park during the 1980s, “where all these plants were grown.”

Alongside these planting displays, the plant nursery team at Newport City Council also produces hanging baskets for commercial premises and hold plant sales during the spring and summer months to offload any excess plants to the keen gardeners of Newport.

Mandi Vincent is one member of the public who loves these plant sales.

She commented: “I have three of these I bought from the council when they have their end of season sale. It’s usually around April and May for about six weeks I believe where they sell off the excess plants that won’t be used,

“There are usually five/six places round Newport, Caerleon and Rogerstone in car parks.

“I’ve got some beautiful plants that I bought over the years excellent quality not rubbish - would highly recommend.”

If one thing is for certain, it is that these displays and the hard work of the plant nursery team are a highlight for many people across Newport.
