A council catering team has raised more than £5,000 to support breast cancer charities.

Staff from the council’s catering team raised money ahead of Wear it Pink Day.

The team organised cake sales in schools, raffles and themed dress-up days to raise funds.

Johanna Brown, assistant catering manager, said: "Most of our staff are women and many have either experienced breast cancer themselves or know someone who has, so we wanted to show our support.

"While it's been about raising money for breast cancer charities, it's also been an opportunity for people who have been affected by breast cancer to talk about their experiences.

"Thank you to all the staff, schools and customers who have shown their support and helped us raise a fantastic amount in just a few days."

The wider community also got involved, with one resident in Blaenavon raising £130.

Wear it Pink Day - held during breast cancer awareness month - is a national fundraising day organised by the charity Breast Cancer Now.

Each year in the UK, around 59,400 people are diagnosed with breast cancer.
