A VETERAN chorister who chalked up 45 years' service with the City of Newport male voice choir, and was its stage manager for much of that time, has died.

Eric Mickleborough, who lived with wife Vera in Somerton, Newport, served with the South Wales Borderers toward the end of, and shortly following, the Second World War, before training as a welder.

After working across the UK, including Rutland, where he met his wife of 49 years, he returned to Newport, working at Uskmouth power station before joining British Steel at Llanwern.

Mrs Mickleborough said her husband travelled the UK and Europe with the choir after joining in the 1950s when it was known as Newport male voice choir.

"He loved the singing and everything about the performances. It was a huge part of his life," she said.

Mr Mickleborough left the choir several years ago after falling ill with heart problems. He died last month aged 81.
