MEMBERS of the public could become involved in the running of cemeteries in the Abergavenny area.

If a proposal to set up a working group for cemeteries in Llanelly Hill, Abergavenny and Llanfoist are given the go-ahead it would see local ward members, together with town and community councillors join interested members of the public to form the group.

Dale Roberts, area general manager for Monmouthshire county council said: "Cemeteries are the first of a number of services which we hope to get local people involved in over the next 12 months."

"There are opportunities for grants and to develop and improve the cemeteries," he added.

Llanelly councillor Giles Howard told members of the Bryn y Cwm area committee that in light of some emotive issues such as the testing of headstones, the involvement of the public would be beneficial.

The proposal is expected to be discussed at the next committee meeting which takes place on 18 February, 2009 in The Memorial Hall, Llanover.
