Walkers, cyclists and anglers can once again use the towpath of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal after it was reopened to the public.

In October 2007 eight people were rescued and the A4077 between Crickhowell and Gilwern was closed for a week after the canal burst its banks.

A 16-mile stretch of the canal has been out of use since and the canal is expected to be open to boat traffic early next year.

British Waterways emptied a section between Llanover and Talybont to carry out £7.5 million repair work.

Most of the canal has now been rewatered and the Gilwern section will be refilled in the new year.
