A NEWPORT engineering company will supply steel for a 2012 Olympic Games building in a contract worth millions of pounds. The news comes after it was announced that only four contracts for the Games were awarded to Welsh firms.

Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell had informed the Welsh Affairs Select Committee on Tuesday that the main contracts are worth less than £100,000 in total.

But the Olympics Delivery Authority said many more Welsh firms would act as sub-contractors including structural steelworks engineering company, Rowecord, based at Neptune Works in Usk Way.

The company will supply 3,000 tonnes of fabricated steel for the roof of the aquatic centre in the Olympic Park.

Most of this steel will be used to make the sweeping waving roof on the building which is being described as the “gateway” to the park.

Rowecord has already been involved with major sporting projects such as the construction of the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, the MK Dons Stadium in Milton Keynes, The Lawn Tennis Association Centre in Roehampton, the new Glamorgan Cricket Club Ground in Cardiff and Welsh National Pool in Swansea.

The firm, which employs more than 600 people and was founded by current chairman Ben Hoppe, also built part of the walkway into the new Wembley Stadium and built the Usk Footbridge in Newport.

Another Gwent company secured as a subcontractor is Fairfield Mabey in Chepstow.

The company, which dates back to 1849 and employs around 250 people, specialises in the plated steelwork of bridges and other heavy structures.

The Olympics Delivery Authority said Fairfield Mabey will fabricate the structural steel work for a number of the major bridge structures in the Olympic Park.

More than 30 bridges are being built in the Olympic Park which will open up the site during the construction phase and will also create an open and accessible park whilst the Games take place and after they finish.

The 17,500 seat aquatic centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, will include a 50m competition pool, a 25m competition diving pool and a 50m warm up training pool.
