MEMBERS of Rogerstone AFC are mourning the death of the man who founded the club in the 1950s.

Ivor Charles James, 83, of Park Place, Risca, was described by friends as having the football club “running through his veins”.

Mr James died on February 8 at the Royal Gwent Hospital after an illness. His funeral takes place at St John’s Church, Rogerstone on Friday.

Nicknamed “The Cat” by club members, Mr James was involved with it for over 50 years, acting as committee man, chairman, vice president, president and linesman.

He also provided sponsorship for the club, buying training equipment throughout the season and trophies at the end for presentations.

Mr James was married to Iris, 85 and had a son Martin, 52. He was a keen churchgoer and worked on the railways for all his working life.

Rogerstone AFC club chairman Alex Mayne said: “He was Mr Rogerstone AFC and he had Rogie running through his veins. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for the club. The players were all fond of Ivor and we are saddened by his loss.”

Club member Jimmy Blackborrow said: “He was like a stick of rock with Rogie right through him. He was an inspiration to us all.”

Club media and relations officer Louise Armstrong said: “Ivor was well known and appreciated within the football community. When he was a touch judge, members of other sides would joke “Oh no, Ivor’s got the flag. He only sees it the Rogie way”.

“But Rogerstone AFC played a big part in his life and he played a big part in our lives.”

Rogerstone AFC- who play in the Monmouthshire Building Society Newport and District League - will have a one minute’s applause before the club's match this weekend as a mark of respect.

His funeral at St John’s Church, Rogerstone starts at 11.30am on Friday.

Club officials have called for players new and old to attend and show their respects for a genuine football man.
