JURORS in the trial of a lorry driver accused of murdering his former boss and attempting to murder his three colleagues will retire to consider their verdict today.

Russell Leon Carter, 52, of Penrhos Crescent, Rumney, Cardiff, denies murdering Driverline 247 director Kingsley Monk, 45, at the company premises in New Inn on October 20 last year.

He also denies the attempted murder of his former colleagues Gethin Heal, Robert Lewis and Nathan Taylor.

The Recorder of Cardiff, Nicholas Cooke QC, yesterday summed up all the evidence the jury heard during the three week trial including witness and police statements, photographs and CCTV footage.

Jurors will today hear a review of the psychiatric evidence before they are sent out to consider their verdict.

The Recorder told the jury yesterday that they must consider if Carter was guilty of causing Mr Monk’s death by either murder, manslaughter or manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility.

He said if they returned a guilty murder verdict they must be sure that Carter killed Mr Monk with the intention of killing him or causing him serious physical injury.

The Recorder advised the jury that when deciding if Carter was guilty of attempting to murder his co-worker Robert Lewis they should be sure that he intended to kill him by either, placing the plastic bag over his head and taping it in place, attacking him with a metal bar, or setting the building on fire.

He said they could only consider if Carter intended to kill Gethin Heal and Nathan Taylor by spreading the flammable substance Selcote around the building and setting it on fire.
