EBBW Vale have strengthened their Welsh Premier Division squad for the new season still further with the signing of three new players.

But in a reversal for the club, young wing or full back Joel Griffin has been told by specialists to take a season out of the game because of a persistent back injury.

The new trio to join the club are former Newport, Pontypool and Cross Keys lock Gareth Taylor, former Pandy Park outside half Owen Biddescombe and young ex-Caerphilly openside Andrew Edwards. Taylor is an aggressive player whose appearances have been curtailed in recent seasons because of his police commitments.

Biddes-combe, who had also been linked with Bedwas, played several games for Keys last season but never fulfilled his potential while ex Bath Academy product Edwards is a promising 21-year-old.

Back row forward Rhys Bowen has signed a new contract to stay with the club and with players such as Neil Edwards and John Bowd having previously joined the ranks, Vale look like building a strong forward base.

"We are still hoping to sign a prop from Down Under before the start of the season," confirmed Alun Harries.

"Negotiations are on-going but, as usual, there are some problems with permits and securing a firm agreement.

"It is unfortunate that Joel has been told to take a year out. He played very well in the first half of last season but then suffered problems with his back, first caused in an accident I believe.

"He does not require an operation but does need a complete rest for a year and we are looking to recruit someone else to cover in the back three."

Ebbw Vale are also to get the services of four players from the Newport Gwent Dragons Academy, including a number eight and centre and the two Wales Under-18s, sons of former club scrum half and now Welsh Rugby Union general manager Steve Lewis.
