Sultry Portuguese sounds and hot jazz at the 2005 Welsh Proms Cardiff

The Welsh Proms Cardiff are well-known for bringing internationally-acclaimed orchestras, singers and soloists to St David's Hall each year for a fantastic summer feast of concerts, but there is much more to the season than simply some of the world's greatest classical music.

There is truly something for every musical taste in this year's Welsh Proms Cardiff, from July 14 to 23, from the sultry sounds of Portuguese fado to swinging jazz, gypsy melodies and tango, and two special concerts for young music lovers.

One of the highlights is the first visit by the award-winning Portuguese fado singer Mariza (World Music Prom - Sunday, July 17). Mariza takes traditional fado - a fusion of flamenco and the blues - and makes it fresh and very much her own.

She has already won a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music and played a sold-out UK tour to ecstatic audiences and critics - don't miss this chance to see and hear this stunning singer, hailed by The Times one of "the greatest divas of our time".

In Jazz Prom on Monday, July 18, one of the UK's hottest young jazz singers, Gwyneth Herbert, will be joined by her five-piece band plus a four-piece string quartet for a concert of jazz classics and original songs, with influences ranging from Cole Porter to Portishead.

Jazz fans will want to book early for this singer, whose contralto voice has been described by The Observer as "a knowing mix of honey, steel and gravel".

There is lots of fun for young music lovers in Children's Prom (Saturday, July 16), with special guest Dave Benson Phillips joining Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Michael Bell for a musical adventure celebrating The Superheroes.

The Tiddly Prom also returns on Saturday, July 23, with a Meg and Mog concert, specially for the under fives.

This year also brings two daytime Proms on Tuesday, July 19. Zum perform the Lunchtime Prom (1pm), with their stunning fusion of Eastern European gypsy fiddle music and hot-blooded Argentinian Tango.

In Organ Prom (5.30 pm), organists Maureen McAllister and Robin Jackson join forces for a special programme of organ duets.

Tickets for all concerts are now on sale. For more information and to book online, visit the St David's Hall website at www.stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk or call the St David's Hall Box Office on 029 2087 8444.
