David Davies Conservative

My top priority if elected would be to continue highlighting the scandal which has seen council taxes rocket by over 100% since 1999 in Monmouthshire.

This has been done by the Labour-run Assembly to pay for schemes like their new debating chamber.

Meanwhile, incomes for pensioners and those working in agriculture remain far too low. Those who fall ill wait three times longer for routine operations than those living in England, and parents face the closure of junior and infants schools, the reduction in school sixth forms and the huge cost of paying tuition fees.

So as well as campaigning for fairer council taxes I will be highlighting the scandalous hospital waiting list times and opposing the closure of local junior schools.

As a member of the Assembly I have campaigned on numerous local issues - preventing the development of Chepstow woods, supporting the fight to save Llanfoist school, opposing the transfer of sex offenders to the open prison at Prescoed, working for a flood defence scheme in Monmouth and much else besides.

I have held weekly surgeries and dealt with hundreds of cases for local people because I believe that the prime responsibility for an AM or MP is to fight for your constituents.

If elected to Parliament, then all of this work would continue. But in addition I would be able to demand improvements on matters of national importance.

I would seek to ensure that the police spend less time behind their desks and criminals spend more time behind bars. Immigration is out of control with ministers admitting that they have no idea how many people are in the country. I do not believe it is not racist to make this point and to call for a fair but firm immigration policy.

I will be committed to a modern health service for all, better schools and higher pensions for the elderly.

A vote for Labour sends a clear message that we are willing to tolerate ever higher council taxes, longer waiting lists, the reduction of local schools, university tuition fees, fewer police on the streets and unlimited immigration.

If I am elected I will work hard for the Conservative priorities of cleaner hospitals, school discipline, lower taxes, more police and controlled immigration. Above all else I will fight hard for Monmouthshire.
