WALES replacement back row forward Ryan Jones has been ruled out of Wales' second Six Nations Championship game of the season against Italy in Rome on Saturday.

Jones went on for Dafydd Jones in the 63rd minute against England, but damaged a shoulder and has already been discounted for the Italy game.

Also out of the running are flanker Colin Charvis with a damaged ankle, centre Sonny Parker, still struggling with his neck injury, and Newport Gwent Dragons lock Luke Charteris, still suffering from damaged ribs.

Five other players from the England match have got minor injuries but are expected to be fit for Rome.

Most concern surrounds open side Martyn Williams, who celebrated his 50th cap with an outstanding performance, but coach Mike Ruddock says he should be OK.

Prop Gethin Jenkins (calf), lock Brent Cockbain (neck), Dwayne Peel (hip) and Stephen Jones (shoulder) are also receiving treatment but are likely to make it while Hal Luscombe is having more problems with his thumb.

Meanwhile, Wales hooker Mefin Davies has joined in the criticism of the Millennium Stadium pitch which cut up badly from the start on Saturday.

"It's not the best playing surface and it goes against us when there are enough hurdles as it is," he said.

"The pitch moves and people lose their footing on it. I felt sorry for the referee, but he was open about the situation."

Trainers on the touchline spent much of their time replacing huge clods of earth that came up once any pressure was applied.

Meanwhile Ruddock urges citing commissioner John West to look at the tape of the incident where England lock Danny Grewcock's boot caught Peel on the head at a ruck and earned him a yellow card along with Wales captain Gareth Thomas for retaliating.

"The same thing happened in the Bath-Leinster game. I'm not saying there was intent, but it was certainly clumsy and it needs to be looked at," said Ruddock.

"It's the second scrum half I've seen with cuts on his head after Guy Easterby got caught as well in the Leinster game.

"The referee's interpretation was he was attempting to step over the ruck, he saw it more as a clumsy act."

The citing commissioner has until today to decide whether to take action.

Ruddock will today receive detailed reports on Italy after their game against Ireland yesterday from former Wales backs Andy Moore and Alan Donovan.

"We will analyse them today and set our targets for Italy," said Ruddock.
